At first, it was one of the most ridiculous things that I had ever heard. I was at a Christmas market in Munich, Germany when I heard a trader yelling, “roll-up, roll-up, wooden ties only twenty euros”. At first I thought that it must be my rudimentary German playing tricks on me again or perhaps the people in Bavaria spoke a lot differently to those I was use to in Berlin or Frankfurt. As I walked on, I looked to my left and I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, there was a young market trader with a stall filled with wooden ties. Not just one tie, but a large range; some were painted in unusual colours and others came with stripes. The crazy thing was, he seemed to be attracting a decent trade. There were numerous groups of people looking at and purchasing the ties. I thought I had seen it all!

I thought nothing more about it after that day. Until that is, around two or three years later when I was at a final round interview for a full time job at one of London’s largest department stores. It was down to the last two. I arrived early and was directed to take a seat in the interview waiting area. I was the first there and sat down alone. Then something very strange happened. A gentlemen came over to me and put out his hand. He was full of confidence at first, and so naturally I assumed it was the interviewer. He then went onto introduce himself as a fellow candidate. He said that his name was David. The confidence he had sent alarm bells ringing through me.

As our hands parted from the handshake, to my astonishment, I noticed that he was wearing a bright pink wooden tie. Suddenly, I thought to myself that this guy was not to be taken seriously, surely? In one moment, I went from feeling very overwhelmed to feeling that I had the situation completely under control and the job practically in the bag.

As the story turned out I couldn’t have been more wrong. My fellow candidate, David was offered the job at my expense. My rejection letter stated that although I was well suited for the job, they felt that the other candidate possessed a greater presence and authority. Maybe they were right? Out of all the fellow candidates I have met at interviews, he is the only one I have ever been able to remember. I even remember his name. Perhaps this was all down to his wooden tie!

I ended up travelling to Munich the following Christmas to find myself an elusive wooden tie. When I managed to track the stall down it was even more popular than the year before. I told my story to the stall owner. He laughed, and told me that it was hilarious for someone to travel so far just for a tie. He even claimed to remember David, the British guy who had bought a pink tie.
